Kayakers Swallowed By Whale Live To Tell The Tale

Shield Insurance Blog | June 8, 2023 | Swallowed By Whale | Life Insurance | Start A Quote Today

VIDEO: Humpback whale almost swallows kayakers near a California beach

The two managed to escape unscathed, briefly going underwater after capsizing before reemerging.

Julie McSorley says she learned an important lesson after she and her friend ended up in a humpback’s mouth: “Whales need their space.”

McSorley and Liz Cottriel were kayaking together in California’s San Luis Obispo Bay watching the whales feed on silverfish when one of the massive sea creatures surfaced beneath them, toppling their kayak and knocking them into the water.

Videos and photos from other kayakers and paddlers appear to show the women and their kayak being momentarily engulfed in the whale’s mouth — though the two friends say it all happened too fast for them to be sure.

“It’s definitely woke me up to the realization that, you know, our place is not in the feeding zone of whales,” McSorley told As It Happens host Carol Off.

“We didn’t think we were that close, but we definitely were right in the area that we shouldn’t have been — so I’ve learned my lesson, big time.”

Swallowed By Whale

AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Two whale watchers had a close encounter while kayaking off the coast of Avila Beach, California, that they will likely never forget.

Julie McSorley and Liz Cottriel were watching humpback whales on Monday when one decided to get up close and personal. A whale came up underneath them and caused them to capsize.

“I saw the big pool of fish, the big bait ball come up out of the water,” McSorley told CNN affiliate KMPH. “I saw the whale come up. I thought, ‘Oh, no! It’s too close.'”

“All of a sudden, I lifted up, and I was in the water.”

Footage from a witness nearby makes it appear as if the kayakers are being swallowed by the whale, but the two just tipped over.

“The whale was right here in my face, literally,” Cottriel told KMPH.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘I’m gonna push. Like, I’m gonna push a whale out of the way! It was the weirdest thought. I’m thinking, ‘I’m dead. I’m dead.’ I thought it was gonna land on me. Next thing I know, I’m underwater.”

The two managed to escape unscathed, briefly going underwater after capsizing before reemerging.

Humpback whales typically feed on krill and small fish, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The NOAA says humpback whales are popular among whale watchers as they are active on the surface and often jump out and slap the water with their pectoral fins or tails.

Small church insurance may also include coverage for pastoral counseling, sexual misconduct, and employment practices liability.

How Does Church Building Insurance Work?

History of July 4th Celebrations

History of July 4th Celebrations

Shield Insurance Blog | HISTORY.COM | JUNE 21, 2022 | July 4th | Start A Quote Today!

The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. The Fourth of July 2022 is on Monday, July 4, 2022.

WATCH: The American Revolution Topic on HISTORY Vault

History of Independence Day, July 4th

When the initial battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain, and those who did were considered radical.

By the middle of the following year, however, many more colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in the bestselling pamphlet “Common Sense,” published by Thomas Paine in early 1776.

On June 7, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for the colonies’ independence.

Amid heated debate, Congress postponed the vote on Lee’s resolution, but appointed a five-man committee—including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of ConnecticutBenjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Robert R. Livingston of New York—to draft a formal statement justifying the break with Great Britain.

Did you know? John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Lee’s resolution for independence in a near-unanimous vote (the New York delegation abstained, but later voted affirmatively). On that day, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2 “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.”

On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

Commercial Auto Insurance Coverage for Vehicles Used for Business Purposes.

Commercial Auto Insurance Coverage for Vehicles Used for Business Purposes.

Shield Insurance Blog | Commercial Auto Insurance | Business Insurance | Start A Quote Today!

Commercial auto insurance is a type of insurance policy that provides coverage for vehicles used for business purposes. This type of insurance is essential for businesses that use vehicles for their operations, such as delivery trucks, company cars, and other types of vehicles. In this blog post, we will discuss business car insurance, what it covers, how it works, who needs it, and how to get affordable protection for your business vehicles.

What is Commercial Auto Insurance?

Business car insurance, also known as commercial auto insurance, is a type of insurance policy that provides coverage for vehicles used for business purposes. This type of insurance is different from personal auto insurance, which only covers vehicles used for personal use. Business car insurance is designed to protect businesses from financial losses that may arise from accidents, theft, or other incidents involving their vehicles.

What Does Business Car Insurance Cover?

Business auto insurance covers a wide range of risks associated with using vehicles for business purposes. Some of the common types of coverage included in a commercial auto insurance policy are:

  • Liability coverage: This type of coverage provides protection against claims made by third parties for bodily injury or property damage caused by your business vehicle.
  • Collision coverage: This type of coverage provides protection against damage to your business vehicle caused by a collision with another car or object.
  • Comprehensive coverage: This type of coverage provides protection against damage to your business vehicle caused by non-collision events, such as theft, vandalism, or natural disasters.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: This type of coverage provides protection against damages caused by a driver who is uninsured or underinsured.
  • Medical payments coverage: This type of coverage provides coverage for medical expenses incurred by you or your passengers in the event of an accident.

How Does Insuring a Business Auto Work?

Insuring a business vehicle is similar to insuring a personal vehicle. The first step is to determine the type of coverage you need based on your business needs and the risks associated with using your vehicles. Once you have determined the type of coverage you need, you can start shopping for insurance policies from different insurance companies.

When you apply for a commercial auto insurance policy, the insurance company will ask you to provide information about your business, the vehicles you use, and the drivers who will be operating the vehicles. The insurance company will use this information to determine the cost of your policy and the level of coverage you need.

What Doesn’t Commercial Auto Insurance Cover?

While business auto insurance provides coverage for a wide range of risks associated with using vehicles for business purposes, there are some things that it does not cover. It is important to understand what is not covered by your commercial auto insurance policy to ensure that your business is fully protected from financial losses.

One thing that business auto insurance does not cover is the personal use of your business vehicle. If you use your business vehicle for personal use, such as running errands or commuting to work, you may need to purchase a separate personal auto insurance policy to cover these activities.

Another thing that business auto insurance does not cover is intentional acts or criminal activities. If you or one of your employees intentionally causes damage to another person’s property or engages in criminal activities while using your business vehicle, your insurance policy may not provide coverage for these incidents.

Finally, business auto insurance may not provide coverage for certain types of vehicles or activities. For example, if you use your vehicle for racing or other high-risk activities, your insurance policy may not provide coverage for these activities. Additionally, some types of vehicles, such as motorcycles or recreational vehicles, may require a separate insurance policy to provide adequate coverage.

Who Needs Commercial Auto Insurance?

Any business that uses vehicles for business purposes needs commercial auto insurance. This includes businesses that use vehicles for deliveries, transportation of goods, or transportation of employees. Even if you only use your personal vehicle for business purposes occasionally, you may still need commercial auto insurance to protect your business from financial losses.

Birth of a Rare Sulawesi Monkey – One of the World’s Most Endangered Primates is Celebrated

GoodNewsNetwork | Andy Corbley | Jun 6, 2023 | Monkey | Insurance | Start A Quote

Conservationists are celebrating the birth of one of the world’s most endangered primates at a UK zoo.

The rare Sulawesi crested macaque was born on May 16th at the Chester Zoo to proud new mom Rumple and dad Mamassa.

Adorable Monkey

Adorable photographs show the new arrival clinging on to its mother as it made its first outside appearance at its enclosure at the UK’s largest and most-visited zoo.

The species is listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and fewer than 5,000 remain in their natural habitat on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Though the adults’ faces are jet black, the babies are born with a buckskin leather tone that highlights their beautiful eyes.

Rumple and baby Sulawesi crested macaque monkey at Chester Zoo – SWNS
“Sulawesi crested macaques are highly sociable animals that live in large groups, and so the new baby is currently being passed around by mom Rumple to several other females, who are all sharing parenting duties, which is great to see,” explained Mark Brayshaw, head of mammals at the zoo.

“Every birth is a step forward for the international conservation breeding program that’s working to safeguard the future of this critically endangered species. It also provides an opportunity to learn more about their behavior, biology, and social structures, which all help to inform the efforts to protect the species globally.”

Sulawesi is the world’s 11th largest island at about 70,000 square miles and is located east of Borneo. A large percentage, 62% (79 species) of the mammals on the island are endemic, meaning that they are found nowhere else in the world.

NOTE: From Wikipedia:

Conservation status: Critically Endangered (IUCN 3.1)[2]

Celebes crested macaque range
(blue—native, red—introduced)
The Celebes crested macaque (Macaca nigra), also known as the crested black macaque, Sulawesi crested macaque, or the black ape, is an Old World monkey that lives in the Tangkoko reserve in the north-eastern tip of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (Celebes), as well as on smaller neighbouring islands.

Description
Locally known as yaki or wolai, its skin and hairless face is, with the exception of some white hair in the shoulder range, entirely jet black. Unusual for a primate, it has striking reddish-brown eyes. The long muzzle with high cheeks and the long hair tuft, or crest, at the top of the head are remarkable features. It has an ‘apelike’ appearance due to its almost non-existent, non-visible, vestigial tail stub of only approximately 2 centimetres (0.79 inches). With a total body length of 44 to 60 centimetres (17 to 24 inches), and a weight of 3.6 to 10.4 kilograms (8 to 23 pounds), it is one of the smaller macaque species. Its life expectancy is estimated at 15 to 20 years in the wild.

What is Business Interruption insurance?

Business Interruption insurance is a type of insurance that provides coverage for loss of business income due to unexpected events. It is designed to help businesses recover from financial losses that result from interruptions to their operations. This type of insurance can be purchased as a standalone policy or as part of a broader commercial insurance package.

What does Business Interruption insurance cover?

Business Interruption insurance covers loss of business income due to unexpected events such as natural disasters, fires, equipment breakdowns, and other events that disrupt your operations. ‘Gift of Adoption’ Marks 5,000th Child Given a Home–Covering the Fees to Keep Siblings Together

‘Gift of Adoption’ Marks 5,000th Child Given a Home–Covering the Fees to Keep Siblings Together

GoodNewsNetwork.org | May 27, 2023 | Adoption | All Insurances | Start A Quote Today!

An American nonprofit is celebrating a huge milestone after helping to unite three brothers at risk of separation—into a new forever family.

The Illinois-based Gift of Adoption Fund has facilitated the placement of 5,000 children since its founding 26 years ago—with over $15 million in grants awarded.

They provide grants of up to $15,000 to help families complete adoptions of kids in vulnerable circumstances—including, most recently, three brothers born in Ecuador.

Gift of Adoption Milestone

“Gift of Adoption is elated to mark this milestone by helping to keep together three siblings at risk of separation,” said Gift of Adoption CEO Pam Devereux. “We’re incredibly grateful to our donors, volunteers and the families with a heart for adoption – we all reached this milestone together.”

Eleven-year-old Josue is the 5,000th child whose adoption was completed with assistance from the nonprofit. He was adopted along with biological brothers Darwin, 9, and Abraham, 6. The siblings were in an orphanage in Ecuador for five years—and at risk of separation—before Nicole and David gave them a new forever family in Wisconsin.

The couple had always sought to adopt older siblings, knowing how much it means to grow up together in the bonds of family—and the negative life outcomes that often await children who age-out of orphanages.

International Sibling Adoptions

“Although international sibling adoptions can be complex and expensive, once we saw their faces, we knew we would make it work in any way we could,” Nicole said. “We are so happy that we can provide a permanent home for these brothers, and they can now grow up together in a stable environment.”

While a reported one-third of Americans have considered adoption, fewer than 4% complete the process- with many citing the high expense as a barrier. Gift of Adoption prioritizes grants for children facing what might be their only chance at adoption, such as those at risk of separation from siblings, entering foster care, aging out of a care system or with medical needs.
